Family and Carer Consultant Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated and engaged mental health professional to join our team at St George Mental Health in Sydney, Australia.

As a Family and Carer Consultant, you will work closely with families and carers of people with mental illness, providing support, training, capacity building, consultation, and specialist clinical interventions. You will be part of a vibrant community mental health service that promotes an inclusive and supportive environment for both consumers and staff.

The role involves facilitating the development of family and carer sensitive mental health services at the clinical/operational level, promoting best practice within the service, and supporting consumer and carer recovery using a systemic strengths-focused perspective and whole-of-family approach.

You will have the opportunity to work alongside allied health, nursing, and medical staff to promote family/carer-focused interventions and provide information, advocacy, education, and clinical interventions to families and carers of mental health consumers residing in the Local Health District.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing specialist clinical knowledge, experience, and skills in building the capacity of the Mental Health Service to respond to, and in providing complex mental health care for, families and carers of a person who experiences a mental illness.
  • Facilitating the development of family and carer sensitive mental health services at the clinical/operational level.
  • Promoting best practice within the service.
  • Supporting consumer and carer recovery using a systemic strengths-focused perspective and whole-of-family approach.
  • Providing information, advocacy, education, and clinical interventions to families and carers of mental health consumers.

Requirements include:

  • Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the Health Professionals (State) Award for Social Work & Occupational Therapy; or qualifications in Psychology with a minimum four-year degree with a major in psychology and registration with the Psychologists Board of Australia; or current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with at least five years full-time equivalent post-registration clinical experience and postgraduate qualifications relevant to the area of specialty and registered with AHPRA.
  • Extensive postgraduate experience in mental health, including working with families and carers.
  • Demonstrated experience in assessment, treatment, and management of families of people who have a mental illness in a mental health and community setting.
