
Dairy Farm Specialist

The primary objective of this position is to oversee and coordinate the entire milk production process, ensuring efficiency and productivity. Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and implementing a comprehensive milking shed routine.
- Designing and managing reproductive programs, including artificial insemination and herd fertility management.
- Collaborating with specialists to conduct controlled breeding experiments for developing improved livestock strains.
- Maintaining optimal calving procedures to minimize stillbirths or injuries to cows or calves.
- Planning and executing pasture and crop management strategies for livestock production and creating effective feeding plans.
- Analyzing produce quality and setting standards for excellence.
- Overseeing animal health programs, treating sick or injured animals, and maintaining a safe environment in accordance with Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines – Cattle.
- Supervising work routines and staff performance of less experienced employees.
- Implementing and monitoring quality assurance procedures to ensure compliance and accuracy of relevant documentation.
- Operating milking plant and equipment safely, including reading and recording instrument information, such as milk vat temperatures and cow numbers.
- Managing dairy recycling systems.
- Assisting with calf feeding, including administering colostrum through tubing.
- Participating in irrigation works.
- Inspecting livestock to assess the effectiveness of feed formulas.
- Handling, storing, and applying chemicals; preparing and using them appropriately.
- Operating farm and dairy-related vehicles, plant, and equipment.
- Identifying and reporting non-functioning equipment; maintaining plant and machinery.
- Performing maintenance tasks on sheds, fixtures, and fittings, fences, and surroundings when qualified; installing new or replacement equipment or fittings.
- Transporting stock, feed, and equipment when licensed.
- Maintaining accurate records for inventory control and stock management.
- Ensuring compliance with food safety regulatory requirements.
- Contributing to and implementing Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) protocols.
- Proficient in computer operations, including setup and basic function operation of software packages.
- Coupling quick response to both occupational health and safety emergencies and animal welfare emergencies.
- Attending enterprise/industry training sessions and workshops as required.
Requirements:
- AQF Certificate III in Agriculture/Dairy Production (or higher equivalent).
- Three years of recent and relevant work experience.
