Researcher in Molecular Evolution
Position Title: Grant-Funded Researcher (Level A)
Salary: $78,544 - $105,611 per annum plus an employer contribution of 17% superannuation.
Employment Type: Full Time | Fixed Term for 2 Years
A two-year fixed-term position is available for a Level A researcher funded by a grant, focusing on an ARC Discovery project that investigates the molecular evolution of subterranean diving beetles. This role is situated within the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide, collaborating with esteemed professionals in the field.
The project leverages a distinctive Australian model system comprising multiple independently-evolved subterranean water beetles to examine the adaptive and regressive genomic changes that surface species undergo when they inhabit subterranean environments. The primary objective is to characterize and analyze the evolution of genes related to chemosensation and circadian rhythms, which are vital for the survival of organisms in dark, thermally stable habitats.
Key responsibilities will include conducting genomic and RNA sequencing analyses of subterranean and related surface beetle species, with a focus on identifying gene families exhibiting adaptive or regressive evolutionary patterns.
The successful candidate will work within the South Australian Regional Facility for Molecular Ecology and Evolution, equipped with state-of-the-art technology for next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation and genomic sequence analysis. Access to high-performance computing resources is also available.
Qualifications and Skills Required:
- A PhD in genetics, molecular biology, or a related field, or equivalent qualifications and extensive research experience in molecular evolution.
- Proven experience in wet lab techniques, specifically NGS library preparation for genomic and/or transcriptomic analyses, along with expertise in phylogenetic analysis.
- Comprehensive understanding of molecular biology and its applications in evolutionary studies.
- Demonstrated capability to conduct independent research, including leadership in research projects and mentoring postgraduate and honors students.
- A record of high-quality publications and presentations at conferences relevant to the field.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively across various disciplines, coupled with strong organizational skills to manage competing priorities.
