Data Scientist in Drone Risk Modelling
We are seeking a Data Scientist to join our team at Queensland University Of Technology, working on a collaborative project with industry partners and the federal government. This role involves developing quantitative approaches to uncrewed (drone) aircraft collision risk modelling using data, applied statistics, and practical aviation constraints/standards.
The successful candidate will conduct research within the Australian Digital Airspace Characterisation project, funded by the Emerging Aviation Technologies Partnerships program. They will use multiple large datasets and supporting infrastructure to create new digital resources and information that enhance uncrewed mission planning, flight approval, airspace management, and regulatory applications.
As a key member of our team, you will work closely with industry partners and stakeholders to test and translate the collision risk models into real-world applications. You will also collaborate with our experienced researchers to develop cutting-edge solutions for the aviation industry.

- Demonstrated ability to conduct applied research, balancing theoretical and practical engineering concepts
- Demonstrated experience in manipulating, exploring, and analysing large data sets using advanced statistical techniques
- Demonstrated experience using mathematical software packages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, R) and/or developing software in other packages (C, C#)
- Demonstrated written communication skills, including the ability to maintain accurate records, with a demonstrated track record in publishing in high-quality conferences and journals, and experience in summarising scientific data in reports
- Demonstrated ability and motivation to engage and actively collaborate with industry partners and government
- Demonstrated ethical standards in research confidentiality, including the ability to protect intellectual property
Benefits:
We offer a competitive remuneration package, including:
- A salary of $130,347 to $154,804 per annum
