Job Overview

The special education teacher role at a public school provides direct instruction and support to students with disabilities.

Working under the direction of the principal and special education supervisor, you will collaborate with general education teachers, monitor student outcomes, and assist in developing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

This part-time position requires a bachelor's degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university, along with Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.

As a special education teacher, your responsibilities will include providing instructional support, collaborating with colleagues, monitoring student progress, and assisting in the development of behavioral interventions.

Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct instruction and instructional support to students with disabilities.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to develop and implement effective teaching strategies.
  • Monitor and evaluate student outcomes to inform instruction.
  • Assist in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Support behavioral interventions as needed.
Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will need the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university.
  • Meets Maryland State Department of Education certification requirements for Standard Professional Certification I (SPC I) in special education.
  • Desirable: Certification in a content area.
  • Fluent in learning theory, differentiated instruction, developmental reading, child development, applied behavior analysis, and assessment.
  • Student teaching experience or two years of teaching experience at the appropriate level.
  • Knowledge of MCPS curriculum, IEP processes, data collection, and ESSA/IDEA related policies.
