Research Fellow in Physical Oceanography and Climate Variability
1 week ago
About the Role
This postdoctoral research position offers an opportunity to explore the ocean's role in climate change by combining ocean flow physics, climate dynamics, and advanced computing.
The role involves using a cutting-edge GPU-based ocean model to conduct ensemble simulations that distinguish natural ocean variability from climate-driven changes.
As a research fellow, you will contribute significantly to the research effort of the project, develop research expertise with increasing autonomy, and collaborate with teams at the University of Melbourne and the Australian National University.
Your Responsibilities
- Conduct research and develop expertise in ocean flow physics and climate dynamics.
- Contribute to model development via GitHub for the project.
- Teach, train, and mentor students in research and scientific skills.
- Conduct internationally competitive research and publish in high-impact journals.
- Participate in School meetings and contribute to planning activities or committee work.
Requirements
- PhD in Physical Oceanography, Dynamical Meteorology, Climate Science, Physics, Geophysical Fluid Dynamics, or a related discipline.
- Demonstrated knowledge of oceanography, climate science, or fluids and turbulence with emphasis on computational aspects.
- Experience with high-performance computing and version-controlled environments.
- Strong computational skills in programming environments like Julia or Python.
- Capacity to publish in high-quality peer-reviewed journals.
About the University of Melbourne
We're a community-driven university with a strong commitment to education and research. Our School of Geography, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers undergraduate and graduate research programs in core discipline areas and multi-disciplinary fields.
