About the Role
As a Marine Technician with the New Zealand Defence Force, you will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the ship's engine and drive systems, power generation and distribution systems, as well as the auxiliary systems and habitability equipment.
You will have the opportunity to work on a wide range of high-performance equipment, including diesel engines, gas turbines, electrical generation and power distribution systems, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, refrigeration and air conditioning plants, and bulk liquid storage and conditioning equipment.
To succeed in this role, you will need to have a strong understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, as well as excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate and maintain the ship's engine and drive systems
- Manage power generation and distribution systems
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of auxiliary systems and habitability equipment
- Perform routine maintenance and repairs on shipboard equipment
- Collaborate with other technicians and engineers to resolve complex technical issues
Career Progression and Training
As a Marine Technician, you will have the opportunity to advance your career through specialized training and education programs.
You will start with basic training and then progress to able technician training, where you will learn about electro-technology, safe technician practices, and workshop safety and skills.
After completing able technician training, you will be assigned to a ship at sea, where you will gain practical experience and consolidate your learning.
Qualifications and Benefits
As a Marine Technician with the New Zealand Defence Force, you will have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized trade qualifications, such as the NZ Certificate (Level 3) in Electro-technology and an Electrical Service Technician (EST) licence.

Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this role, you must be at least 17 years old, have a NCEA Level 2 certificate, and meet the minimum entry fitness standards.
You must also be free of any criminal convictions and meet the minimum citizenship and security requirements to gain the required security clearance.
