Southbank, Victoria, Australia University of Melbourne Full time

Position Overview

The University of Melbourne's Melbourne Conservatorium of Music is seeking to fill a full-time, ongoing position in the field of Ethnomusicology. We are looking for a dynamic and collaborative academic who is enthusiastic about enhancing the Musicology and Ethnomusicology disciplines by introducing innovative perspectives on various musical traditions.

We encourage applications from individuals with theoretical frameworks and ethnographic expertise in either traditional or contemporary music cultures, particularly from regions such as South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, or the global South. These areas will complement our existing strengths in musicology, ethnomusicology, popular music studies, and Indigenous studies.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to inspire students through the delivery of undergraduate and honours courses, oversee subject coordination, and provide mentorship to postgraduate scholars. You will contribute to a comprehensive and stimulating curriculum that challenges both Bachelor of Music and general education students while nurturing a vibrant research community.

We seek a candidate with a strong national reputation and a promising international presence, ready to make a significant contribution as a scholar and researcher in Ethnomusicology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and deliver lectures, tutorials, seminars, and workshops in ethnomusicology and related areas.
  • Coordinate academic subjects and oversee non-western performing ensembles as required.
  • Develop and implement curriculum for core and elective music subjects.
  • Contribute to the field through the publication of peer-reviewed articles, academic books, and presentations at conferences and symposia.
  • Recruit and supervise honours and postgraduate students in ethnomusicology and related fields.
  • Enhance the research capacity of the area through successful grant applications and collaborations.

Candidate Profile

We are looking for a dedicated and engaging educator with experience in higher education, a commitment to inclusive teaching practices, and the ability to collaborate effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.

The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational skills, excellent interpersonal abilities, and a proven track record of working with individuals from various cultural contexts.

This position offers a unique opportunity to significantly impact the field of Ethnomusicology while advancing your academic and professional journey within a supportive and collaborative environment.

Qualifications

  • A PhD in ethnomusicology or a closely related field, utilizing ethnographic methods.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching at the tertiary level.
  • Experience in developing and delivering courses in ethnomusicology or related disciplines.
  • Ability to teach on diverse cultural traditions and topics that align with the strengths of current faculty.
  • A strong publication record in reputable journals and with leading academic publishers.

This role requires the successful candidate to maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check.

Commitment to Growth

We are dedicated to attracting top talent and offer various appointment levels, starting from Academic Level B (Lecturer) to Level C (Senior Lecturer), based on your experience and accomplishments. You will have excellent opportunities for academic development and leadership within a secure, ongoing role.

About the Faculty

The Faculty of Fine Arts and Music fosters an innovative and energetic environment, housing the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. Our campus provides world-class research facilities, empowering you to excel in your role.
