About the Role

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is a leading provider of healthcare services to Aboriginal people in the South West of Western Australia. We are seeking a highly skilled Counsellor to join our clinical team, providing culturally safe and respectful support to our community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and group counselling services to clients, focusing on mental health, alcohol and other drug issues, and disabilities.
  • Develop and implement culturally sensitive case management plans, working collaboratively with clients and other healthcare professionals.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop strategies to mitigate risks, ensuring the safety and well-being of clients.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare teams to deliver comprehensive care, including health promotion initiatives and events.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records, using electronic case file writing and data entry systems.
Requirements
  • Tertiary qualification in Counselling, Social Work, or Psychology, or a similar field.
  • Well-developed counselling skills, with experience working with Aboriginal communities.
  • Integrated understanding of the historical context of Aboriginal people, with a commitment to cultural safety and respect.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, managing a caseload and prioritizing tasks effectively.
  • Sound interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships within a multidisciplinary environment.
  • Current Working with Children Check, WA Driver's Licence, and National Police Certificate.
