Special Education Teacher

This position is assigned to a medically fragile service pathway. A special education classroom teacher fosters an effective learning environment, establishing and adapting learning objectives and standards for special education students based upon general district guidelines and the rules and regulations governing special education.

The teacher provides instruction, counsels, disciplines, and supervises to meet the individual needs of assigned students; evaluates student performance and progress. Essential functions include planning an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs, implementing established program or curriculum objectives as adapted for the student population, and establishing and implementing classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior.

  • Fosters an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of assigned special education students;
  • Plans an instructional program designed to meet individual student needs;
  • Adapts and modifies programs and plans as necessary;
  • Uses necessary and appropriate instructional methods and materials;
  • Attends in-service training and continues professional growth to remain current in methods and techniques for special education instruction;
  • Establishes and implements classroom policies and procedures governing student behavior;
  • Provides guidance, counseling, and discipline to encourage students to meet standards of achievement and conduct;
  • Confers with students, parents, specialists, and other staff to provide guidance and evaluation, and to encourage student achievement;
  • Evaluates and records student progress;
  • Directs the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel;
  • Collects and interprets data;
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates individual education plans (IEPs);
Key Responsibilities:
  • Teach special education students to meet individual needs;
  • Implement adaptive learning strategies and materials;
  • Collaborate with colleagues to enhance student outcomes;
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress;
  • Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and community members;
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to improve instructional practices;
  • Supervise and support paraprofessionals and other support staff;
  • Analyze and interpret data to inform instruction and make data-driven decisions;
