
Strategic Regulatory Counsel

As a key member of the Global Regulatory Strategy and Advisory Team, Legal, this role will provide legal counsel on regulatory matters affecting Morningstar's operations in Asia and Pacific. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of financial services regulations and compliance requirements.
The Role:This is a primary legal resource on identifying and addressing regulatory issues that may affect Morningstar's operations in Asia and Pacific. The role will work closely with the business to advise on regulatory strategy and risk, including strategic initiatives and new business line development.
The successful candidate will serve as one of Morningstar's contacts and negotiators in APAC with regulatory bodies. Additionally, they will assist with formal examinations or investigations by regulators, regulatory registrations, and written submissions in response to consultations from regulators in APAC.
The role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize workflow and meet deadlines. Leadership skills and the ability to influence are also essential for this position.
Key responsibilities include:
- Advising the business on regulatory strategy and risk
- Providing guidance on regulatory compliance requirements
- Serving as a key contact and negotiator with regulatory bodies in APAC
- Assisting with formal examinations or investigations by regulators
- Developing and implementing training frameworks for the regulatory legal team
Applicants must have a law degree and be qualified to practice in Australia. At least 8 years of financial services or securities law experience in Australia or other APAC jurisdiction is required. Financial services compliance/regulatory experience is also necessary.
Substantive familiarity with ASIC requirements is required. Structured finance transactional experience or experience in dealing with regulatory bodies in the Asia-Pacific region is an advantage.
In-house experience working for a regulated entity is preferred. Investment advisor, research, or asset management regulatory experience is beneficial. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including excellent drafting abilities, are also essential.
