Child and Family Specialist Role Overview

The Child and Family Practitioner position plays a crucial part in delivering skilled casework support and supervision to children and young people within family-based care arrangements.

This involves outreach style support to young people in the community, with a focus on foster carer support and regulation of care.

The successful candidate will work in partnership with foster carers, children, and relevant government agencies to develop and implement individualised care plans that meet required standards of care and prioritise the protection and well-being of children and young people.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Undertake child-focused casework practice in partnership with government agencies, families, carers, and stakeholders.
  • In a CARE-informed approach, work with carers to understand trauma, loss, neglect, and abuse and its impact on children.
  • Apply the CARE model daily to enable children to learn trust, life skills, form relationships, and gain resilience.
  • Build and strengthen carer skills in involving children in decision-making and supporting their potential.
  • Perform case management functions as prescribed in contracts or funding agreements where necessary.
  • Negotiate between organisations to ensure each child's needs for stability are met.
Requirements:
  • Recognised Social Work qualifications (AASW eligibility) or Bachelor of Psychology/Bachelor of Welfare or related field.
  • Significant experience in child protection and out-of-home care sectors.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals, families, and communities from a strength-based perspective.
  • Demonstrated expertise in identifying strengths and areas for improvement within foster care context.
  • Demonstrated teamwork experience within a multi-disciplinary setting.
