The Role

We are seeking a skilled mechanical tradesperson to join our Advanced Warhead Technologies (AWT) group, part of the Sensor and Effectors Division at Defence Science and Technology (DST) Group - Edinburgh, South Australia.

The successful candidate will provide precision machinist support to experimental and trials work programs, and will be required to make last minute changes or modifications to components or manufacture necessary hardware within short timelines.

The role requires a high degree of technical skill, with experience in precision machining, CNC operations, welding, resin casting, and 3D prototyping. The successful candidate will also be required to attend and support remote field trials at various locations.

About Our Team

The AWT group provides a sovereign R&D capability to design, prototype, and characterise advanced warheads and energetic materials to transform future ADF warfighting capabilities. We are a team of chemists, engineers, physicists, and technical specialists who conduct R&D focused on novel warhead concepts for advanced weapon systems and emerging energetic materials technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide precision machinist support to experimental and trials work programs
  • Manufacture and modify components using precision machining, CNC operations, welding, resin casting, and 3D prototyping
  • Attend and support remote field trials at various locations
  • Work independently and as part of a team to achieve project goals

Requirements

  • Relevant trade qualification and experience in precision machining, CNC operations, welding, resin casting, and 3D prototyping
  • Ability to work at a high level of technical skill and attention to detail
  • Experience with high precision machining, e.g. warhead, fuze, and vacuum components
  • Understanding of machine cutting tools and experience with NC machine tools
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
