Senior Deck Officer

The role of Senior Deck Officer is a key position in ensuring the safe and proper operation of a vessel.

This critical role entails responsibilities including overseeing cargo operations, managing crew performance, enforcing safety protocols, and maintaining knowledge of maintenance needs across the deck and accommodation areas.

  1. Leading the preparation of loading and discharge plans to ensure efficient logistics and timely delivery;
  2. Providing guidance and oversight during Chief Officer watchkeeping duties as required in port and at sea;
  3. Expertise in matters pertaining to cargo, cargo spaces, cargo systems, and cargo handling for seamless operations;
  4. Supervising and training crew members engaged in cargo duties to enhance overall efficiency;
  5. Ensuring strict adherence to safety precautions and regulations;
  6. Coordinating with various departments to guarantee that all policies and procedures are properly implemented;
  7. Maintaining comprehensive knowledge of maintenance and repair requirements for both deck and accommodation areas;
  8. Offering support and guidance to Deck Officers, including Deck Cadets, to foster professional growth;
  9. Capable of accurately recording and managing ShipSure entry and Deck department requirements.
Requirements
  • Mandatory educational requirement: As per AMSA Marine Order 71;
  • At least 12 months documented qualifying seagoing service in charge of navigation watch;
  • MSIC Card (required or ability to obtain);
  • Working Safely at Heights (required or ability to obtain);
  • Enter and Work in a Confined Workspace certification (required or ability to obtain);
  • Current AMSA Medical (required or ability to obtain).
