Software Engineering Team Lead

This role presents an opportunity to excel as a software engineering team lead on one of Australia's most significant defence projects.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on technical knowledge combined with leadership skills, enabling them to own the planning, coordination, and governance of software releases. This position is perfect for senior engineers or release managers looking to move into a leadership role within an Agile DevSecOps environment.

• Create and manage release schedules, coordinating across integration, verification & validation (V&V), and delivery teams.
• Oversee build and deployment pipelines, ensuring smooth promotion through environments.
• Develop and enforce release governance processes, balancing speed with quality and compliance.
• Identify, track, and mitigate release-related risks and dependencies.
• Define and refine processes that maintain configuration control across the program.
• Ensure software elements are correctly baselined and integrated into the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system.
• Champion best practice in CI/CD pipelines, version control, and change management.
• Lead configuration audits and guide developers through issue resolution.
• Mentor and support team members, embedding a culture of continuous improvement.

As a key member of the project team, you will work collaboratively with cross-functional groups to achieve project objectives.

• Coordinate with stakeholders to define project requirements and develop project plans.
• Work closely with development teams to ensure timely delivery of high-quality software releases.
• Liaise with testing teams to ensure successful integration and testing of software components.
• Collaborate with operations teams to ensure smooth deployment and maintenance of software systems.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

• A degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or similar, or equivalent experience.
• Strong skills in release management, scheduling, and stakeholder coordination.
• Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools such as GitLab pipelines.
• Proven experience with version control and repository management, including GitLab and Nexus.
• Solid understanding of Agile/DevSecOps practices and methodologies.
• Strong communication and leadership skills, with the ability to guide technical teams and influence stakeholders.
• An Australian NV-1 security clearance and ability to access/handle Export Controlled technology, data, and information.
• Prior experience as a Release Manager or Build Manager in large-scale software projects.
• Familiarity with containerisation/orchestration technologies, including Docker and Kubernetes.
• Knowledge of configuration management in regulated or safety-critical industries, such as defence and aerospace.
