This entry-level employment pathway is designed for high-performing undergraduate students currently studying a relevant STEM degree. You will have the opportunity to apply your academic knowledge and research skills, access cutting-edge technology, and receive mentoring and guidance from leading experts in the field.

The STEM Cadetship offers positions in various locations across Australia, including Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth (Rockingham), and Sydney. As a STEM Cadet, you will work across Defence to provide scientific advice and/or develop technologies relevant to university studies.

You will also be required to:

  • Provide scientific and technical support to current Defence operations and military capability platforms
  • Explore future technologies for Defence and national security applications
  • Ensure Australia is a smart buyer and user of Defence equipment
  • Develop new Defence and national security capabilities

In return for your hard work and dedication, you will receive ongoing APS employment with the Department of Defence, a minimum annual salary, flexible work arrangements, immersive learning opportunities, and relocation assistance if required.

To be considered for a STEM Cadetship, you must meet certain eligibility criteria, including Australian citizenship, full-time study at an Australian university, and completion of at least 12 months' full-time tertiary study of a relevant STEM degree before starting the Cadetship.
