Job Title: Principal Design Engineer

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Principal Design Engineer to lead our design team in creating innovative structural solutions for major infrastructure projects. This is a key role within our organization where you will be responsible for mentoring junior engineers, breaking down complex design scopes, and managing resources to deliver high-quality designs.

Main Responsibilities:
  • Lead and grow a small design team, including mentoring junior engineers and hiring more junior design engineers.
  • Break down larger design scopes into smaller parts to assess hours for each stage and provide competitive offers for clients (tendering).
  • Manage scopes within agreed budgets, utilizing resources efficiently, including overseas teams.
  • Undertake design duties across all facets of the company's engineering services, focusing on Specialised Temporary Works Design from concept to construction, considering permanent works impact.
  • Specialist skills in FEM modelling desired, with proficiency in software such as SpaceGass, Midas Civil, Strand7, Autodesk suite, and Tekla Structures/Tedds.
  • Acquire, reinforce, or expand knowledge in your area of expertise under senior professional guidance and mentoring.
  • Work within the Design Team to conceptualize structural solutions, develop agreed concepts, and create detailed designs and documentation.
  • Efficiently utilize specialist structural design software, undergo training as required, and stay up-to-date with current and future software.
  • Provide design deliverables, including design briefs, return briefs, reports, calculations, and design-driven construction sequence statements.
Requirements and Qualifications:
  • Preferably registered as Chartered Engineer (Structural) with Engineers Australia or aspiring to do so within 6 months.
  • Site experience and a practical attitude to solving construction-related problems.
  • Experience in complex structural engineering, such as complex bridge projects and complex methodologies.
  • Structural degree with sound to advanced ability in structural steel and concrete design, good understanding of structural systems, and load path based on first principles.
  • Familiarity with Australian Standard Design Codes of Practice.
  • Competency with 3D structural analysis software.
  • Proactive problem-solving capability.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work.
  • Computer literacy, including MS Outlook, Word, Excel.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Strong communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work well in a team.
  • Honest and trustworthy, possessing cultural awareness and sensitivity.
