About The Opportunity

Port Macquarie Hastings Council is seeking an experienced Chemist to join our team at the Environmental Laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering routine and non-routine analytical testing and technical advisory services to the Laboratory and its customers in accordance with NATA/ISO accreditation and good Laboratory principles and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Undertake analytical testing of water and wastewater samples
  • Check and evaluate analytical results, generate reports, release results/reports and provide interpretative advice to customers
  • Undertake maintenance and calibration/checks of Laboratory and sampling equipment
  • Ad hoc field sampling
  • Review and evaluate emerging methodologies, update and enhance current processes, methods and Standard Operating Procedures and develop and implement new methods
  • Assist in the acquisition and commissioning of new Laboratory equipment
  • Critically review and continually improve processes and systems to optimise efficiency
  • Participate in Quality Control/Quality Assurance requirements within the Chemistry Laboratory and ensuring compliance with applicable external regulators, standards, requirements and established protocols
  • Participate in the Laboratory's Internal Audit Program including undertaking Internal Audits
  • Provide training for internal staff and external customers
Requirements
  • Degree qualification in Chemistry or Applied Science (major in Chemistry)
  • Excellent analytical skills with demonstrated knowledge and recent experience in undertaking Chemical analysis of water and wastewater
  • Experience running and maintaining Laboratory instrumentation
  • Strong communication, organisational and time management skills
  • Ability to perform tasks to meet deadlines while maintaining a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail and excellent record keeping
  • Self-motivated and ability to work autonomously as well as part of a team
  • Demonstrated experience in a NATA accredited environment
  • Commitment to safety and continuous improvement
