We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced legal professional to join our team as a Legal Counsel. As a seasoned lawyer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of our city through expert legal advice, litigation, and strategic planning.

Your primary responsibility will be to manage a diverse portfolio of legal matters independently, providing high-level problem-solving and interpersonal skills to build trusted relationships with senior management, staff, and external stakeholders. You will draft complex legal documents, including contracts, deeds, and voluntary planning agreements, and guide and mentor junior legal staff to ensure their growth and development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage a diverse portfolio of legal matters independently, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Provide expert legal advice to senior management and staff on complex issues, leveraging your strong track record of managing regulatory interactions.
  • Represent the organization in hearings and forums, utilizing your expertise in briefing external counsel and legal providers.
  • Draft complex legal documents, including contracts, deeds, and voluntary planning agreements, showcasing your attention to detail and commitment to excellence.
  • Guide and mentor junior legal staff, fostering a culture of learning and development within the team.
Requirements
  • A seasoned legal professional with demonstrated in-house experience, ideally within the public sector, with a strong understanding of local government operations in New South Wales and relevant legislation.
  • High-level problem-solving and interpersonal skills, enabling you to build trusted relationships while maintaining professional objectivity.
  • Expertise in briefing external counsel and legal providers, with a proven track record of effective collaboration.
  • A current unrestricted Australian Practicing Certificate, demonstrating your commitment to ongoing professional development.
