The Opportunity

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at Monash University's Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute. The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative project between Monash University and Newcastle University, UK, focusing on mitochondrial encephalomyopathy with lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS).

MELAS is a maternally-inherited mitochondrial disorder that predominantly affects the nervous system. The project aims to determine how transmission of the pathogenic mtDNA ;G variant is shaped by the biochemical demands of generating and transmitting a haploid maternal genome during mammalian oogenesis.

The successful candidate will spend up to 12 months at Newcastle University and the remainder of the time at Monash University. We are looking for a candidate with a strong background in neuroscience and a passion for research.
