About our team

We are a department that helps communities to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from the impact of fire and emergency events.

Our purpose is to provide services and support to volunteer groups providing emergency response. We encompass fire management, mitigation and response services for rural and semi-rural communities and some urban fringe areas.

Job Purpose

The Rural Fire Service is a team of bushfire experts who lead and manage operational functions. They provide services and support to volunteers, including fire wardens, who provide fire management, mitigation and response services.

As a Support Officer you will be responsible for providing high level confidential administration services to support operations activities, staff and volunteers. You will set priorities and monitor workflows to manage human resource and finance administration, records and database management. You will also coordinate nominations, official functions, diary management and/or secretariat duties as required, and monitor compliance with policies and procedures to ensure efficient service delivery.

Key Requirements

You will need:

  • Desirable government purchasing qualifications
  • Knowledge or experience in human resource and finance systems and database management and reporting
  • Experience as a volunteer or working in a volunteer environment

Special requirements

Participation in an out of hours on call roster during emergency operations may require work outside of normal hours, including weekends, extended hours and deployment to other parts of the state or interstate.

Accountabilities

You will be responsible for:

  • Providing high level administrative support, including assisting in the preparation, review and coordination of correspondence, reports and other materials
  • Undertaking general office duties, mail distribution, filing, diary control, travel arrangements and functions, maintenance of office equipment and asset records
  • Liaising and maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including members of the public and volunteers
  • Utilising databases to create, update, analyse and report on business activities and provide operating support
  • Prioritising workload effectively and performing duties responsibly in the absence of supervision
  • Support and administrative duties during emergencies and disasters
