Job Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced and strategic leader to fill the role of Chief of Staff in our Cyber Operations Division. This is a key position within the Defence organisation, reporting directly to the 2-Star Major General.
About the Role
- As the Chief of Staff, you will be responsible for providing strategic advice to the MAJGEN on current and emerging issues relevant to the COD and the Defence enterprise;
- You will advise the MAJGEN and the COD executive leadership team and staff on matters relating to governance, risk and public sector accountabilities;
- You will undertake internal and external engagement and representation to advance the COD strategic intent and business objectives;
- Attendance with, or representing, the MAJGEN at internal committees and meetings;
- Maintaining awareness of, and delivering support to, Government priorities including through media enquiries, ministerial briefs, and cabinet submissions;
- Oversight and management of the COD office and support staff, ensuring that diary management, travel, guest management, etc. are professionally delivered, including the reprioritisation of arrangements at short notice due to emerging issues;
- Oversight of Human Resources, Governance, Information and Knowledge Management, and Work Health and Safety functions; and
- Being adaptable, resilient and a model of Defence and APS values to deliver timely and excellent results.
Our Ideal Candidate
We are looking for an enthusiastic, professional, and experienced candidate who is able to think strategically, set and prioritise busy workloads, identify risks and opportunities and collaborate effectively in a Whole of Government setting to achieve results. Our ideal candidate must have a very high level of understanding of governance, risk, compliance and ministerial acumen as well as a sound understanding of the machinery of Government and a proven ability to achieve results in a Whole of Government setting.
Salary Details
The estimated annual salary range for this position is AU$190,000 - AU$240,000 per annum, plus superannuation and other entitlements.
About Our Team
The CoS manages a team of one Executive Level 2 and four Executive Level 1 officers with supporting APS staff who provide a range of broader enabling functions. The team works to support Defence's Cyber Operations area with numerous Directorates that provide support to Defence personnel nationally and internationally.
Your Skills and Qualifications
- Strategic thinking and planning skills;
- Experience in governance, risk, compliance and ministerial acumen;
- Sound understanding of the machinery of Government;
- Proven ability to achieve results in a Whole of Government setting;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines;
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
- High level of integrity and discretion;
- Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment;
- Flexibility and adaptability;
- Postgraduate qualification in a relevant field (e.g. Public Administration, Business Administration);
- Minimum 8 years of experience in a senior leadership role in the Australian Public Service or equivalent experience in a private sector or international organisation;
- A strong network of connections across the defence industry and government sectors.
