About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Legal Advisor to join our team at the Department of Treasury and Finance. As a Legal Advisor, you will provide technically sound and solutions-based legal services across a range of issues faced by the Department and its associated Ministerial portfolios.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to senior executives and Ministers on a range of legal issues, including public and administrative law, statutory interpretation, and commercial contracting.
  • Draft contracts, legal instruments, and correspondence, including those for which there is no precedent.
  • Contribute to the Department's strategic planning and development, including the development of policy proposals and Cabinet submissions.
  • Brief counsel and external legal advisers, and monitor their engagement to ensure high-quality work within agreed budgets.
  • Develop close and effective relationships with other Departmental business units, other departments, and agencies.
Requirements
  • Admission to practice as an Australian lawyer and eligibility to hold a Victorian practising certificate.
  • Experience providing technically sound and solution-focused legal advice in one or more of the following areas: public and administrative law, statutory interpretation, commercial contracting, infrastructure projects, mergers and acquisitions, litigation, or employment law.
  • Experience supervising junior lawyers and/or administrative support staff conducting legal and practice management tasks.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with a strong commitment to service excellence and assisting clients and stakeholders achieve their organisation's and project's objectives.
  • A strong commitment and proven ability to work collaboratively and flexibly as a member of an energetic, high-performing, busy team.
  • A proven ability to work in a sustained way and deliver results under pressure, where there are competing priorities, incomplete or ambiguous information.
  • A proven ability to identify, manage, and escalate legal, policy, and commercial risks.
