We are seeking a highly skilled Speech and Language Specialist to join our team at the Department of Education, Western Australia. As a Speech and Language Specialist, you will play a critical role in supporting the speech and language needs of students with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD).

The successful candidate will possess extensive knowledge in planning for the speech and language needs of students with DLD to support class and whole of school language initiatives. They will work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and have highly developed ability to work independently.

The Speech and Language Specialist will develop and support the implementation of specialised language programs in classes for students with identified speech and language difficulties/impairments. A key aspect of the role is building the capacity of teachers and other staff members to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to maximise language learning outcomes for students.

The centre is highly innovative and utilises and drives research into what works best for students with DLD. Staff are highly collaborative with many involved in the development of innovative programs.

The Speech and Language Specialist will work as part of the early intensive student program, which caters for students from Kindergarten to Year 2. The centre is situated across four sites in Padbury, Hamersley, Heathridge and Quinns Rocks. The Speech and Language Specialist may be located at any site and may move across sites over time.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and support the implementation of specialised language programs in classes for students with identified speech and language difficulties/impairments.
  • Build the capacity of teachers and other staff members to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to maximise language learning outcomes for students.
  • Work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team and have highly developed ability to work independently.
  • Monitor and evaluate language impaired students' progress both individually and in the context of language/literacy programs.
  • Plan, implement, monitor and review speech and language programs.
  • Develop well-developed interpersonal skills which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an inter-disciplinary team in an educational and/or community setting.
  • Develop well-developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports.

Selection Criteria:

  • Demonstrated ability to provide specialised speech and language services and support to students with speech and language impairments and knowledge of the latest trends and research in speech and language development.
  • Demonstrated ability to monitor and evaluate language impaired students' progress both individually and in the context of language/literacy programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, implement, monitor and review speech and language programs.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills which demonstrate an ability to function in a self-directed way, and as a member of an inter-disciplinary team in an educational and/or community setting.
  • Developed well-developed oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports.

  • Consent to a National Criminal History Check with the Department's Screening Unit.
