Data Protection Specialist

As a key member of Tesla's Legal group, you will have the opportunity to work with a dynamic and experienced team on a wide variety of legal issues impacting our business and products globally. You will work closely with business and engineering teams to apply legal standards and applicable frameworks to design innovative data, privacy, cybersecurity, and AI solutions as it relates to our compliance activities and regulatory obligations in the Asia-Pacific region.
You will be challenged to creatively apply your deep legal expertise to rare and complex aspects of the law. Legal acumen is required, but you need to have a keen business sense, a strong work ethic, and a deep passion for customers and data protection. You must have the ability to operate independently, proactively, and cross-functionally with technical and non-technical teams across the company. As we expand our offerings globally, your ideas and contributions will make an immediate impact.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Assisting in driving privacy and data protection compliance for business and functional leaders and their teams.
- Collaborating with business and engineering teams on incorporating privacy by design into products and services and adopting innovative privacy solutions from inception and beyond.
- Continuously enhancing our global privacy program through the performance of gap assessments and executing remediation activities.
- Providing timely responses to customer and regulatory inquiries and investigations related to data, privacy, cybersecurity, and AI.
- Researching and tracking global privacy and security legislation, evolving regulations, and enforcement, and translating that into practical advice.
- Counseling on privacy and security incident preparedness and management.
- Creating and presenting engaging training and awareness content, and further developing our privacy and data protection practices in APAC and globally.
- Ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and reflecting relevant changes in external privacy notices, internal privacy and data handling policies, playbooks, and other materials supporting our global privacy program.
Requirements include:
- Strong substantive knowledge of relevant privacy, cybersecurity, and AI laws, regulations, and frameworks (specifically in Australia, China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, and Thailand).
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal skills with the ability to present information and complex legal matters clearly and concisely.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage a diverse and complex workload while maintaining priorities and proactively anticipating issues.
- Consistent good judgment and ability to apply legal knowledge to help create practical business solutions.
- Flexibility, a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and the ability to constructively balance change in alignment with business needs.
- Strong execution and project management skills, and the ability to corral stakeholders from across the organization on cross-functional initiatives.
- Juris Doctor and membership in good standing in at least one state bar is required. Minimum of 5 years of relevant in-house experience (or law firm) with evidence of exceptional ability.
- Certified International Privacy Professional Certification (CIPP) is preferred.
