Lead Legal Counsel, Product

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Legal Counsel, Product to join our dynamic legal team at Canva. As a key member of our product legal team, you will play a critical role in ensuring that our products continue to delight our community and meet our goals, while also keeping users safe and meeting community and regulator expectations.
Key Responsibilities- Act as the lead for product counselling, working closely with the Head of Product and Product Managers across the product delivery lifecycle to ensure compliance with laws, including privacy, AI, marketing, consumer protection, and content moderation laws.
- Coach a growing team of Product and Privacy Counsels that act as dedicated legal partners supporting Canva's various groups.
- Support Canva's mission to become the most trusted platform by keeping the team accountable for their goals that reduce risk, while balancing this against the company's growth goals and risk appetite.
- Provide training and awareness of product legal risks to Canvanauts across the business, including Product, Engineering, Design, and Customer Happiness teams.
- Ensure team effectiveness and responsiveness on privacy impact assessments and support requests from the business, inspiring the team to exceed expectations.
- Together with the broader legal team, ensure the terms of use are up-to-date to reflect new product rules and allow our Customer Happiness Team to enforce and interpret the Terms of Use for users and customers.
- Monitor and report on the regulatory landscape on laws applicable to the risks associated with product launches.
- Collaborate with our employment, commercial, privacy, and intellectual property specialists.
- Drive privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default as part of the product development lifecycle.
- Experience as a Product Counsel at a fast-paced and global technology business, with technical expertise in privacy, AI, consumer protection, marketing, and intellectual property laws.
- Knowledge of key laws relevant to a global SaaS company based in Australia, including GDPR, Data Protection Act (UK), ePrivacy Directive, Australian Privacy Principles, Spam Act, Australian Consumer Law, Digital Services Act, Online Safety Act, and EU AI Act.
- Strong and collaborative leadership skills, with the ability to hold people to account with empathy and inspire the team to pursue excellence.
- Ability to proactively identify issues and analyze opportunities to help Canva and the broader legal team achieve its goals.
- Experience collaborating with and influencing stakeholders to prioritize product delivery and compliance, with a track record of delivering projects in dynamic and ambiguous environments.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make complex communications simple.
