As an Animal Care Specialist: Avian, you will work at a prestigious AZA-accredited institution providing daily care and maintenance of avian collections.
Key Responsibilities:- Provide routine care for the avian collection
- Assist with relief coverage for the Texas horned lizard collection when needed
- Maintain facilities including cleaning and light repairs
- Support the Animal Care Department with procedures as required
- Attend Attwater's Recovery Team meetings whenever possible
- Compile reports and records for the Avian Curator
- Collaborate with the Animal Health Department on daily treatments if necessary
Secondary responsibilities include enhancing visitor experience, engaging with Environmental Engagement and Marketing/Public Relations Departments, and supporting public control and management.
Requirements:- University degree in Biology, Zoology, or related field, or 2 years' experience in a professional avian collection
- Interest in artificial incubation of galliformes and other birds
- Understanding of biology and behavior of galliformes and other birds
- Expertise in hand-raising birds
- Public speaking skills
- Familiarity with PC software and proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Word
Candidates must be able to lift 50 pounds, bend, stand/walk for up to two-thirds of their shift, work outside in extreme weather conditions, operate small equipment, and adhere to safety rules.
