Culturally Sensitive Case Management

The primary responsibilities of this role include supporting case management to address cultural issues and program referrals for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners during their sentence.

Contribute to sentence management by attending prisoner inductions, parole interviews, and assisting with transition arrangements for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners.

Working within a multidisciplinary team to manage the progression of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners through the correctional system, including assessing prisoners and providing reports to sentence management and professional staff.

Liaising with prisoners' families, management, and Queensland Corrective Services staff to ensure individual, social, and cultural needs are met.

Coordinating Elder visits to correctional centres on a monthly basis and as required.

Facilitating offender access to legal services through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, including managing visits and contact with nominated legal representatives.

Contributing to staff awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoner needs.

Providing welfare services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander offenders to support them during times of need, such as family issues or medical services.

Assisting with the facilitation of criminogenic programs targeting identified prisoner rehabilitation needs, particularly those focusing on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners.

Completing program exit reports and documentation, and ensuring relevant case notes are entered into the Integrated Offender Management System (IOMS).

Maintaining comprehensive case notes and providing consultancy services to professional staff within the centre.

Essential Skills and Qualifications
  • Ability to work with diverse Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • High level of discretion and confidentiality
  • Proficiency in IOMS and other relevant software systems
