At Canva, we are redefining how the world experiences design. As a Senior Backend Developer, you will play a key role in shaping our AI-powered platform that empowers users to create stunning designs.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Staff Backend Engineer to lead the development of highly scalable and reliable backend systems for our Ingredient Generation Service (IGS). IGS powers our GenAI products and features, enabling users to easily integrate common functionality such as moderation and quota management. As part of this team, you will drive technical innovation, foster collaboration, and champion platform health and operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and deploy high-performance backend systems that meet complex product requirements.
  • Lead technical innovation and platform evolution by identifying opportunities to improve architecture, performance, and scalability.
  • Foster collaboration and knowledge sharing with other engineering and product teams.
  • Champion platform health and operational excellence by establishing high standards for code quality, testing, and monitoring.

Requirements and Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you will need:
  • Significant commercial experience in software development, with a proven track record of designing, building, and scaling complex, high-performance backend systems.
  • Deep expertise in Java and related ecosystems, with a strong understanding of architectural patterns and best practices for building distributed systems.
  • Exceptional command of computer science fundamentals, including advanced knowledge of algorithms, data structures, concurrency, distributed systems, and design patterns.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship, influencing technical direction across teams and projects.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex technical ideas to diverse audiences.
