About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Blood Biobanking Officer to join our team at the University of Newcastle. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in processing blood, bone marrow, and tissue samples, with a strong focus on maintaining high-quality outcomes and accurate records.

The role requires efficient retrieval and receipting of samples from delivery points within HMRI or John Hunter NSW Pathology Laboratory, as well as reproducible processing of samples according to project-specific Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The successful candidate will also be responsible for cataloguing and secure storage of samples while maintaining specimen inventory accuracy.

In addition to technical skills, we are looking for someone with excellent communication and teamwork skills. The ability to work independently and adapt to new computer systems is essential, including demonstrated high level accuracy for entering sample data and reconciling sample details.

Key Responsibilities
  • Timely retrieval and receipting of samples from delivery points
  • Efficient processing of samples according to project-specific SOPs
  • Cataloguing and secure storage of samples
  • DNA and RNA extraction, including new research protocols
  • Inputting and maintaining detailed records in OpenSpecimen Database
Requirements
  • Completion of a degree without subsequent relevant work experience; or completion of an associate diploma and at least 2 years subsequent relevant work experience;
  • Experience in processing blood, bone marrow and/or tissues in a laboratory setting;
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team;
  • Ability to adhere to established SOPs and willingness to handle infectious material;
  • Competency in using various computer applications and a willingness to adapt to new systems;
