About the Role

The Senior Child Protection Counsellor (Social Worker Level 3 or Psychologist) is a key position in the Child Protection Counselling Service (CPCS) within South Western Sydney Local Health District. The CPCS aims to provide specialist counselling and interventions to improve the emotional, social, and mental wellbeing of children, young people, parents/carers, and their families where there has been a confirmed history of violence, neglect, and trauma incidents.

This role is responsible for providing trauma-informed interventions, case coordination, client-focused advocacy, liaison, and consultation to other health professionals. The ideal candidate will have extensive postgraduate clinical experience in providing counselling, groupwork, parenting, and case management interventions to clients affected by child protection issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide specialist counselling and interventions to improve the emotional, social, and mental wellbeing of children, young people, parents/carers, and their families.
  • Conduct assessments, develop case plans, and coordinate services to meet the needs of clients.
  • Prioritize a challenging and demanding workload, manage stressful situations, and apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with complex cases.
  • Engage with difficult and involuntary clients, demonstrating empathy and understanding.
  • Collaborate across services to ensure clients receive the service they need, when they need it.
Requirements
  • A Social Work degree or Full registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia.
  • Demonstrated extensive postgraduate clinical experience in providing counselling, groupwork, parenting, and case management interventions to clients affected by child protection issues.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child protection issues, including relevant legislation and guidelines, and the appropriate response for clinical practice.
  • Demonstrated experience in engaging with difficult and involuntary clients, prioritizing a challenging and demanding workload, and managing stressful situations.
