Job Opportunity: Deputy Principal Legal Officer

As a high-calibre legal professional, you will work closely with senior colleagues to develop leadership capabilities and career development plans. Your key responsibilities will include supporting the management of day-to-day legal operations, supervising and mentoring junior solicitors, and representing our organisation in legal and community settings.

  • Deliver expert legal advice, casework, and representation in complex and/or litigious matters.
  • Provide sensitive support in areas including child protection, family law, and domestic and family violence (DFSV).
  • Supervise and mentor a team of solicitors, including onboarding, performance reviews, and professional development.
  • Act as a leader during periods of absence.
  • Lead outreach services within remote communities.
  • Design and deliver community education workshops and resources.
  • Strengthen relationships with legal, government, and community stakeholders.
  • Contribute to internal strategy, compliance, risk, and reporting processes.

Requirements:

  • Australian Solicitor admission and eligibility to hold a Northern Territory Practising Certificate.
  • At least 4 years post-admission legal experience in a relevant practice area.

Desirable Qualifications and Experience:

  • Leadership and mentoring experience within a legal practice.
  • Expertise working within fields such as DFSV, family law, or child protection, and familiarity with NT legislation.
  • Ability to work in trauma-informed, culturally responsive ways.
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities and commitment to cultural safety.
  • Excellent legal writing, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.
