Classroom Teacher Generalist

Belvoir Special School is a multi-mode specialist school in Wodonga that provides a high-quality educational program for students with mild, moderate, and profound intellectual disabilities. Many students also have a level of physical disability. Students range in age from five to eighteen years old. In 2014, the school moved to a brand new purpose-built facility, which has been constructed for a peak enrollment of around 220 students. The current student population is 195. To attend the school, students must meet the statewide eligibility criteria and are enrolled at Belvoir Special School after consultation with parents, previous schools, or kindergartens and appropriate paramedic personnel if needed, in accordance with the school's documented enrollment policy.
Our PhilosophyOur school's philosophy is reflected in its programs and based on the belief that children learn best in a cooperative environment that is happy, challenging, supportive, and non-threatening. Belvoir is a School Wide Positive Behaviour Support School and has developed a school culture that is reflected by the ideals of SWPBS. As a school, we encourage active involvement and participation of students, staff, parents, caregivers, volunteers, and the wider community. Belvoir is committed to developing lifelong learners who are encouraged to pursue their individual strengths and talents. Our aim is to enable all students who graduate from Belvoir to live an enviable life, which allows them to achieve all their dreams. To do this, we require committed teachers who see the special characteristics of all our students and will strive to ensure each individual feels safe, is confident, and valued as a person.
Selection CriteriaOur selection criteria are designed to ensure that we attract and select the best candidates for the role. The criteria are as follows:
- Demonstrated knowledge of the relevant curriculum, including the ability to incorporate the teaching of literacy and numeracy skills. Demonstrated experience in responding to student learning needs.
- Demonstrated experience in planning for and implementing high-impact teaching strategies, guided by how students learn, and evaluating the impact of learning and teaching programs on student learning growth.
- Demonstrated experience in monitoring and assessing student learning. Demonstrated experience in using data to inform teaching practice and providing feedback on student learning growth and achievement to students and parents.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining collaborative relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and the broader school community to support student learning, agency, wellbeing, and engagement.
- Demonstrated behaviours and attitudes consistent with Department values. Demonstrated experience in reflecting upon practice and engaging in professional learning to continually improve the quality of teaching.
The classroom teacher classification comprises two salary ranges: range 1 and range 2. The primary focus of this role is to provide high-quality teaching and learning experiences for students with mild, moderate, and profound intellectual disabilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating teaching programs that cater to the diverse needs of students. They will also be expected to work collaboratively with colleagues, parents, and the broader school community to support student learning and wellbeing.
