PhD Studentship in Scientific Research Literature Analysis

The University of Melbourne is seeking applicants for a 3-year PhD studentship to explore information extraction from published scientific research literature. Our project focuses on relation and event extraction, co-reference resolution, and semantic table analysis.

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with expertise in natural language processing and computational linguistics. The successful applicant will join our NLP group and work under the direction of Associate Professor Karin Verspoor and Dr Trevor Cohn.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research in information extraction and natural language processing
  • Collaborate with the Content and Innovation team at Elsevier BV
  • Develop novel approaches to biochemical information extraction using deep learning techniques

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Strong undergraduate honours (with research) degree or a Master's Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Understanding of methods in machine learning and computational linguistics
  • Interest in acquiring knowledge of the biochemical domain
  • Prior experience in research projects
  • Good communication and writing skills
