We are seeking an Animal Care Specialist to join our team in a world-class biocontainment facility. As a key member of our animal care unit, you will be responsible for providing expert care and welfare to animals, collecting and managing samples and data from infected research animals, collaborating with scientists and veterinarians, and upholding rigorous quality assurance and biosafety standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Animal Husbandry and Welfare: Ensure the ethical treatment of animals and compliance with approved protocols.
  • Technical Support in Containment: Assist with research procedures and collect biological samples from animals in PC3/PC4 microbiological containment.
  • Compliance and Ethics: Adhere to Animal Ethics Committee protocols and microbiological security regulations.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Liaise effectively with scientists, veterinarians, and technical team members to support research outcomes.
  • Record Keeping and Quality Systems: Maintain accurate records and contribute to the development of monitoring and compliance systems.
  • Facility Operations: Support the running of multiple animal facilities, including manual labor and logistical problem-solving.

This role involves working in a fast-paced environment with a tight-knit team conducting cutting-edge research at high biosecurity levels. You will work weekends and occasional shifts and must be medically and psychologically fit, security-cleared, and vaccinated for high-risk pathogens.

Requirements:
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field (science, agriculture, veterinary, nursing), or demonstrated 3+ years equivalent experience.
  • Prior experience with husbandry and handling a broad range of species, such as domestic livestock, laboratory animals, and/or wildlife.
  • The ability to work safely with animals infected with serious zoonotic disease agents, following appropriate training and wearing personal protective equipment.
  • A strong team player who can work productively and harmoniously, both independently and collaboratively towards team goals.
  • A flexible approach to meet the needs of the team roster for weekend and after-hours work.
