General Medicine Trainee Role

The Advanced Trainee position in General and Acute Care Medicine entails delivering high-quality clinical care to patients under supervision, while developing expertise in the practice of General Medicine. This involves timely and appropriate communication with other medical, nursing and allied health staff regarding a patient's condition and recommended management.

The Advanced Trainee is accountable for:

  • Assessing, reviewing, and ongoing managing general medicine patients;
  • Participating in departmental quality activities, including clinical trials, research, and peer review and audit projects;
  • Supervising junior doctors allocated to their clinical team during normal working hours and providing guidance after hours;
  • Continuing education opportunities, including Grand Rounds, educational meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings, journal clubs, and other relevant activities;
  • Completing required projects under the guidance of experienced project supervisors;
  • Complying with all legislative, policy/protocol requirements as they relate to NSW Health Policy Directives, Guidelines, Code of Conduct, and Supervision requirements set by the NSW Medical Board;

Key challenges include balancing training and education requirements with service provision in a busy public health service, maintaining a professional role and responsibility for patient care, and working collaboratively with other staff in a multi-disciplinary team.

Effective liaison with consultants will allow the Advanced Trainee to demonstrate their level of ability and understanding of patient care, enabling expansion of areas of responsibility. Decision-making is critical, requiring clear communication of patient care decisions with specialist medical practitioners.

Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Qualifications: Current registration as a medical practitioner with AHPRA consistent with Advanced Training in General Medicine, at least 4 years postgraduate experience, and completion of FRACP written and Clinical examinations;
  • Clinical skills: Effective assessment, care planning, care provision, case management, and management of unstable patients;
  • Teamwork, time management, and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team;
  • MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia, and eligible for Advanced Training in General and Acute Care Medicine, RACP.
