Prenatal Caseworker Role Overview

Working as a prenatal caseworker can be challenging, yet also rewarding.

Job Description

Our team is responsible for responding to reports about safety concerns surrounding children or young people who may have been harmed. As a caseworker, you will work sensitively and respectfully with parents, family members, children or young people, collaborating with other agencies and engaging in complex problem solving.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Undertaking assessment/investigation and ongoing family work with expectant parents to identify and address safety and risk concerns for children following their birth
  • Advocating for and supporting families to engage with services and participate in meetings such as Pregnancy Family Conferences or hospital complex case meetings
  • Developing and maintaining networks and relationships with key stakeholders, including NSW Health staff
  • Collaborating with NSW Health in the promotion and implementation of the Pregnancy Family Conferencing Model

The primary focus of decision making for a caseworker is in assessing/investigating and supporting expectant parents during pregnancy to reduce risks and help parents build skills and prepare them to keep their baby safely in their care.

Additional responsibilities include ensuring clear discharge planning, considering parallel planning and assessment as required, assisting families in formulating goals that align with their needs, addressing safety and well-being concerns, and providing appropriate assistance through home visits.

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Social Work, Social Science, Welfare or related discipline
  • Experience working in child protection assessment and case planning, preferably with prenatal cases
  • A valid driver's licence and a paid working with children clearance number
