Job Description

This role involves providing confidential short-term counselling services to current students to help them overcome barriers to successful participation and progress in educational activities. The counsellor will also provide a consultative service to educational staff in relation to student conduct / behaviour.

This position reports to the Team Leader, Student Services. This is a Temporary Full-time opportunity, and the position will be based primarily at Nambour, but may require work at other campuses.

A genuine occupational requirement of this role is that it be filled by an Aboriginal and / or Torres Strait Islander person.

Main Responsibilities
  • Provide emotional support to students experiencing psychological distress affecting their performance and progress.
  • Assess and advise management on possible responses to critical incidents.
  • Offer study guidance to existing and prospective students promoting courses and pathways.
  • Support teaching / administrative staff in behavioural management of students, including skill development programs.
  • Assist students with special needs, such as those with disabilities, migrant students, overseas students, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
  • Collaborate with government agencies and community organisations to support student access and outcomes.
  • Act as a link between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and regional staff.
  • Liaise with School Community Education Counsellors and community organisations to provide information sessions about training opportunities.
  • Participate in Orientation and Open Days, Expositions and other external activities promoting TAFE Queensland.
  • Participate in relevant professional development and supervision to ensure high standards of practice.
  • Maintain records of service provisions and provide accurate monthly reports.
Key Qualifications
  • Possession of a degree in Educational Psychology, Psychology or Social Work from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Identification as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.
