Job Overview

We seek a Housing/Shelter Support Worker to provide direct support and services to residents and shelter users.

The ideal candidate will possess strong problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and collaboration skills, as well as the ability to work independently and show initiative and creativity.

This is a part-time position working two 12-hour shifts per week (24 hours/week), Thurs/Fri DAYS (7am to 7pm).

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with resident support plan development and delivery of services.
  • Develop rapport and trusting relationships with residents.
  • Perform wellness checks and participate in set-up and clean-up of shelter.
  • Distribute supplies and meals to residents.
  • Assist with activities such as room cleans and application referrals.
  • Develop and implement short-term intervention plans.
  • Evaluate effectiveness of intervention plans and report on clients' progress.
  • Gather information relevant to clients' problems, needs, and risks.
  • Plan and conduct basic individual counselling sessions.
  • Maintain active files and records, and provide reports to supervisors.
  • Use influential techniques to clients resistant to support and intervention.
  • Assist with laundry and maintenance tasks as directed.
  • Support residents with developing independent life skills.
  • Maintain knowledge of laws and legislation affecting residents.
  • Utilize de-escalation skills and maintain safe environment.
Requirements:
  • Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Training in non-violent crisis intervention techniques and harm reduction approach.
  • Knowledge of community resources and services available to shelter users and residents.
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative and creativity.
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of and ability to employ behaviour management techniques.
  • Ability to work in intense and challenging work environment.
