The Role:

This role seeks a talented researcher with expertise in physics, engineering or mathematics to contribute to developing innovative solutions for managing bushfires in Australia.

Bushfires pose significant risks to communities and the environment. They can lead to spot fires occurring kilometres away, putting firefighters and members of the public at risk.

In this exciting 3-year opportunity, you will undertake novel research into the aerodynamic and combustion characteristics of common firebrands. You will develop models of firebrand flight and ignition viability using our Vertical Wind Tunnel facility.

Your duties include:

  • Developing new impactful research streams focused on spotting and firebrand dispersal;
  • Conducting experimental research to quantify and model flight and combustion characteristics of firebrands;
  • Exploiting opportunities for innovation and theoretical perspectives in fire behaviour research;
  • Operating and modifying our Vertical Wind Tunnel as required.

Key Requirements:

To be considered, you must have a PhD in physics, engineering or mathematics and no more than 3 years of postdoctoral research experience. Relevant skills and experience in fluid mechanics, turbulence or combustion are highly regarded.
