Job Overview

The Head Gardener is a permanent full-time position, responsible for coordinating strategic planning for gardens and collaborating with all departments to develop programs and promote the museum.

About the Role

Horticultural management and maintenance of grounds, public programmes and marketing, communication and professional practice are key focus areas for this role.

Duties
  • Horticultural Management: Prepare annual and triennial plans for development and maintenance of grounds; implement comprehensive garden care programs; oversee watering, pest control, pruning, mowing, and arboriculture.
  • Maintenance of Grounds: Maintain external public areas to a high standard of safety and cleanliness; service garden vehicles and equipment; repair and coordinate maintenance of garden and fence structures.
  • Management: Advise Senior Management on parks and gardens imperatives; support Development with funding and sponsorship and marketing strategies; manage gardening staff, volunteers, apprentices, and interns; manage external contractors.
  • Public Programmes and Marketing: Work with Learning and Audience Engagement to develop programming; contribute to heritage research; represent the museum at events and seminars; assist with function setup and visitor guidance.
  • Communication and Professional Practice: Oversee apprentices and volunteers; maintain strong communication with Facilities Manager and Executive Director; liaise with Wurundjeri community and land managers.
Requirements

The ideal candidate will have a Diploma/Degree in horticulture or landscape gardening, proven management experience with budgets, staff, and safety standards, extensive knowledge of horticulture in public environments, and experience maintaining large gardens or public parks.
