Underground Backfill Engineer Job Summary

  • The Underground Backfill Engineer plays a key technical role in optimising and managing paste backfill systems to support safe and efficient underground mining operations.
  • This position requires strong analytical skills, experience with project management, and excellent communication skills.

The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of geotechnical principles and be able to provide expert guidance on cemented paste backfill strength design aligned to mining methods and stope sequencing.

About the Role\
  • We are seeking an experienced Underground Backfill Engineer to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • Driving improvements in paste backfill performance through optimisation of rheology, reticulation, QA/QC, and backfill strength design—while proactively identifying and mitigating associated risks.
  • Maintaining and executing QA/QC programs in alignment with the site's Backfill Management Plan.
  • Reviewing and updating paste backfill standards and procedures as needed to ensure consistency and best practice across operations.
  • Collaborating with mining and processing teams to troubleshoot and resolve operational challenges, ensuring optimal paste composition, rheology, and effective system flushing to prevent blockages.
  • Identifying and evaluating emerging technologies and innovations to continuously improve paste backfill systems and practices.

Qualifications\
  • Bachelor's Degree in Geotechnics, Mining Engineering, Civil/Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years experience as a backfill engineer, including in operational roles.
  • Experience in Project/Cost/Contractor Management.
  • Knowledge of the Mines Safety and Inspection Act & Regulations.
  • Valid C Class manual drivers licence.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment medical to include drug and alcohol screening.
