About the Role
Chefs in the New Zealand Defence Force are responsible for the entire range of catering requirements, from cooking meals for ships' companies to catering for official functions. As a Chef, you will be expected to cook for a diverse range of people, from junior sailors to high-profile dignitaries.
Our Chefs work in galleys at sea and in shore establishments, preparing and cooking meals for up to 400 people. This means you could be working on a ship or in a base, and your duties will include meal preparation, cooking, and presentation.
Job Responsibilities

Career Progression and Training
As a Chef in the New Zealand Defence Force, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills and progress in your career. You will receive comprehensive training in food preparation, cooking, and presentation, as well as leadership and management skills.
Qualifications and Benefits
All Chefs in the New Zealand Defence Force are trained to NZQA level 4, and receive qualifications in food preparation, cooking, and presentation. You will also receive a competitive salary, allowances for time spent in the field, and access to sponsored tertiary study programmes.
Entry Requirements
To become a Chef in the New Zealand Defence Force, you must be at least 17 years old, have a minimum of 3 years secondary school education, and meet the minimum entry fitness standards. You must also be free of any criminal conviction for the previous two years and meet the citizenship and security requirements.
