Position Overview:
A fixed-term opportunity is available for a Level A researcher, focusing on the molecular evolution of subterranean diving beetles. This role is part of an ARC Discovery project within the School of Biological Sciences.
Project Details:
The research project aims to explore the adaptive and regressive genomic changes that occur when surface species adapt to subterranean environments. Utilizing a unique model system of independently-evolved subterranean water beetles, the study will investigate the evolution of critical genes related to chemosensation and circadian rhythms, which are essential for survival in dark habitats.
Research Activities:
The successful candidate will engage in genomic and RNA sequencing analyses, focusing on identifying gene families that exhibit adaptive or regressive evolutionary patterns in subterranean species compared to their surface counterparts.
Required Qualifications:
- A PhD in genetics, molecular biology, or a related field, along with extensive research experience in molecular evolution.
- Proven wet lab skills, particularly in NGS library preparation for genomic and transcriptomic analyses, and experience in phylogenetic studies.
- Strong foundational knowledge of molecular biology and its application in evolutionary contexts.
- Demonstrated capability to conduct independent research and mentor postgraduate students.
- A track record of high-quality publications and conference presentations relevant to the field.
- Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
