Job Title: Principal Legal Officer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal Legal Officer to join our team in the Department of Justice and Attorney-General. As a key member of our Strategic Policy and Legislation team, you will play a critical role in delivering and leading legislative and policy projects in relation to criminal law, criminal justice, and Domestic Family and Sexual Violence (DFSV) matters.

About the Role

The Principal Legal Officer will be responsible for:

  • Developing and implementing policy and legislative options in relation to criminal law and criminal justice;
  • Providing high-level advice to the Minister and Parliament on complex legislative and policy issues;
  • Representing the department in Parliamentary Committee hearings;
  • Supervising other team members in the team.
Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated high-level ability to understand key issues and emerging trends in criminal justice and/or DFSV policy;
  • Proven ability to lead the analysis, development, and evaluation of complex policy and legislative options;
  • Excellent oral and written communication and negotiation skills;
  • Ability to build and maintain stakeholder relationships;
  • Ability to manage and enhance the performance of others.
