Orientation and Mobility Specialist

Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada is a unique health services organization that serves people who are blind or partially sighted across the country.

We provide training to empower clients to develop or restore activities of daily living skills, promote independence, enhance safety and mobility.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct assessments and document O&M needs and personal goals of individuals with vision loss.
  • Teach concept development, spatial and sensory awareness, pre-cane skills, cane techniques, and travel skills.
  • Provide information and lessons in the use of electronic travel aids.
  • Encourage and support individuals in assertiveness/advocacy skills related to orientation and mobility.
  • Act as a resource person for guide dog schools and provide skill development to prepare individuals to work with a guide dog.
Requirements:
  • A graduate degree from a recognized institution in Instruction for Blind and Visually Impaired Program or Diploma in Specialized Studies, O&M and Vision Rehabilitation.
  • An undergraduate degree or equivalent in a relevant field.
  • ACVREP Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) certification.
  • Good command of relevant computer applications.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Work Environment:

Services will be provided in office centers, individual homes and/or the community. Willingness to work flexible hours and travel required.
