About the Role

CLS Oceania Pty Ltd, a subsidiary of the CLS Group, is seeking an experienced Oceanographic Technician to join our team in Melbourne and Hobart. As an Oceanographic Technician, you will be responsible for providing technical support for various applications, including monitoring, tracking, and data collection.

Key Responsibilities
  • Inventory Management: Maintain workshop supplies and tools by inventorying stock, placing, and verifying receipt of orders.
  • Instrument Testing: Test scientific instruments in the workshop and field to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Order Management: Prepare and place orders for project consumables and instrumentation, and monitor orders to ensure safe receipt of items.
  • Documentation and Packing: Assist with the preparation of project documentation and packing of shipments for freighting to the work site.
  • Travel and Deployment: Travel to remote work sites for the configuration of instruments and rigging up of oceanographic moorings, and deploy and recover moorings from vessels while documenting these operations.
  • Liaison and Communication: Liaise with client representatives and vessel crew on work sites, and document all work to comply with the company's quality objectives.
  • Safe Work Environment: Maintain a safe work environment by following codes, standards, and legal regulations of the company and its client's work sites.
  • Professional Development: Update job knowledge by participating in training opportunities, including the reading of technical publications and training manuals.
Requirements
  • Educational Background: A combination of education and experience, with at least a 3-year degree or diploma in a science or engineering discipline, and a technical understanding of instrumentation.
  • Working Environment: The work is performed primarily in an office and warehouse environment, with normal working hours scheduled during office hours. However, this position will require travel to remote work sites and field work from vessels and platforms.
  • Physical Demands: The field work may occasionally be physically demanding, and it is a requirement of this position that the candidate maintain a valid Offshore Medical Certificate and undergo Offshore Survival Training.
  • Desirable Attributes: Independent, goal-oriented self-starter with focus on detail, passion for the marine environment, familiarity with a variety of oceanographic and meteorological instrumentation, proficiency with Microsoft software, and other characteristics such as ability to understand, react, and adapt to various technical requirements, focused on safety, technical writing capability, sound judgment, ability to multi-task, decision maker, proactivity, and dynamism.
