Job Description

The Principal Legal Adviser plays a pivotal role in leading Treaty negotiations with First Peoples' Representative groups on behalf of the State, ensuring a coordinated and focussed approach for Statewide Treaties and Traditional Owner Treaties with Aboriginal Victorians.

This position involves strategic legal advice delivery, team leadership, and research to address sensitive issues within tight timeframes. Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading a team of legal advisers
  • Delivering high-quality, strategic, clear, and considered legal advice
  • Research, correspondence, briefings, Cabinet Submissions, and reports
Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Highly developed interpersonal and negotiation skills
  • Strong legal, analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven ability to lead a team to initiate, deliver, and manage strategic projects
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities
  • Strong policy and analytical skills
  • Understanding of government processes
  • Australian legal profession admission and current practising certificate
