Fixed term, full time position for 24 months.

This position is based within the University of Adelaide’s barley research program, located in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine (Waite Campus), which works closely with national and industry partners to strengthen Australia’s $484M malt export industry and $2B barley industry. The role supports a new ARC Linkage Project that will characterise differences in barley water uptake and drying, and identify genetic, biochemical, and morphological factors underpinning malting performance.

Working under general direction, the Laboratory Technician will provide specialist laboratory support for experiments spanning grain hydration and drying assays, malting and kilning simulations, compositional and microscopic analyses, and genetic mapping of malting traits. The position will contribute to the generation of high-quality data across multiple experimental platforms (pico-, micro-, and industrial-scale malting) and support collaboration with industry and research partners. The role will also assist with implementation of laboratory processes and contribute to a collaborative team environment, ensuring efficient laboratory operations and compliance with health, safety, and quality requirements.

To be successful you will need:

- Proven ability to build effective and constructive working relationships with academic, technical, student, and industry stakeholders, contributing to collaborative project outcomes.

- Working knowledge of grain biology techniques, with demonstrated experience in laboratory-based assays such as sample preparation, grain screening, malt quality assays, compositional assays, or microscopy.

- Clear knowledge of industry-standard processes for grading, quality assessment, and processing of barley grain.

- Previous experience working in a laboratory environment, with knowledge of compliance, safety, and record-keeping requirements.

- Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate experimental records to analyse experimental data.
