The Melbourne Zoo Veterinary department provides world class veterinary treatment to over 3500 collection animals as well as conservation medicine to support critically endangered species, breeding programs and a wildlife triage and treatment hospital.

We are seeking a skilled and motivated veterinarian to join us on a permanent, part‑time basis. The primary purpose of this position is to deliver medical care to collection animals and wildlife and assist in delivering appropriate standards for veterinary care with the Life Sciences Manager – Animal Health, Senior Vet and Veterinary Hospital Supervisor for all animals presented. The associate veterinarian will assist with daily operations and planning to achieve this. Teamwork and good communication skills plus experience with some administrative tasks will be required as the successful candidates will be responsible for specific portfolio items.

Responsibilities

- Providing preventative and curative health care to collection animals, endangered species programs, and sick or injured wildlife, including maintenance of medical records, nutrition and necropsy examination of deceased animals.

- Work within the team by maintaining a progressive and collaborative professional work environment.

- Assist in educating, training and mentoring of other veterinary staff, zoo keepers, wildlife carers, veterinary residents and veterinary students.

- Contribute to the review and development of standards of care.

Qualifications

- A current Bachelor of Veterinary Science, with additional qualifications in wildlife medicine highly regarded.

- A Category C firearms license or ability to obtain one.

- At least 5 years practical veterinary experience, including a minimum of 3 years working in a zoo or wildlife facility.

- Proven ability to implement effective work practices to maximise the health care and welfare of animals and the safety and wellbeing of staff.

- Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.

- An ability to work effectively in a team and independently.

- A current working with Children Check.

Job Details

- Based at Melbourne Zoo

- Ongoing Part‑Time 0.5 FTE

- Roster includes weekend work

- Salary from $114,390 p.a. + 12% superannuation
